The job
The Department of Sociology at Tilburg University is ranked among the top sociology departments in the Netherlands. Its program covers the area of social inequality and social cohesion from a comparative and dynamic perspective, with a specialization in quantitative research methods. This perspective focuses on the comparison of countries over time, either from a macro-perspective or from a micro-macro perspective, and is inspired by Tilburgs central role in the coordination of the European Values Study. The Department of Sociology is initiator and coordinator of this large scale survey research project, which is the leading, most comprehensive and authoritative project on values and norms. Data collections took place in 1981, 1999, 1999 and 2008 in an expanding number of countries. The latest wave includes all European countries with more than 100.000 inhabitants. The project aims at a data collection in all European countries in 2017 (see also www.europeanvaluesstudy.eu).

Tasks:
- Develop and carry out an innovative, theoretically relevant and feasible research project on the cross-national and longitudinal study of political and social attitudes;
- conduct empirical research using state-of-the-art advanced research methods;
- collaborate with peers, and participate actively in conferences, workshops, seminars and other scholarly activities;
- prepare a doctoral dissertation and scientific articles to be submitted to international refereed journals
- provide in teaching support for courses like "Introduction to Sociology".

Your profile
- Completed (or completion in the near future) MA degree in Sociology or related disciplines;
- experience in designing and conducting survey research, with specialization in quantitative research strategies to analyze comparative and/or longitudinal data sources;
- willingness and aptitude to work in a collaborative research environment;
- good English communication skills, both oral and in writing;
- language competencies in other languages than Dutch or English will be considered as an advantage.

Employment terms and conditions
Tilburg University is among the top Dutch employers and has an excellent policy concerning terms of employment. The collective employment terms and conditions for Dutch universities will apply. The PhD appointment at Tilburg University begins with a period of 12 months. Continuation of the appointment with another 36 months will be based on performance evaluation. The gross salary for the PhD position amounts € 2083,- per month in the first year, resing to € 2664,- per month in the fourth year, based on a full-time appointment (38 hours per week).
