44th GESIS Spring Seminar: Challenges for Empirical Social Science Research: Assessing Data Quality - Identifying Structures in Complex Data
Date: 02.03 - 20.03.2015 ics-file
Location: Cologne
The GESIS Spring Seminar is designed to foster knowledge and judgment skills in the application of multivariate statistical analysis techniques for survey data. First, you learn about the potentials of the given tools for data analysis in all depth and then, in a second step, also new and important data sources are examined.
The courses consist of lectures and hands-on-workshops:
The lectures will provide profound theoretical knowledge on statistical methods. The use of parameters will be explained and requirements for publications will be discussed.
The hands-on-workshops will explain how to apply these methods to data. Examples with real data from social science research will be given. As a result, you will be enabled to use the methods in your own research context. In the PC-lab, all programs and data will be available. Participants are encouraged to bring their own data sets to the seminar.
In 2015 we additionally show why and how Correspondence Analysis, Multidimensional Scaling and other dimensional Representation- and Visualization techniques as well as specific Multiple Regression techniques help to get a deeper insight into specific tasks: Cross-national comparison of data, data quality, machine learning and Big Data.
The courses will start on Mondays at 10:00 a.m. and will end on Fridays at about 4:00 p.m.
The Spring Seminar provides reduced rates for participants from academic institutions (including the public and the non-profit sector) and gives a further reduction to students (including PhD students), if they can officially document their status. Please do not forget to upload your proof of status in the respective field in the online registration form. Travel costs, accommodation and meals are not included. Please make your own arrangements.
If you find out after registration that you are unable to attend, we would very much appreciate if you could let us know as soon as possible so that we can reallocate your place to another applicant.
Accommodation
In spring-time, Cologne hosts numerous international trade fairs. The hotels in Cologne then tend to be fully booked at very early times. If you need an accommodation, we strongly recommend to book directly after your registration. Especially between March 9 and 14, the hotel situation will be extremely tense. You will find a list with recommendations here.
