XVI International conference on «The Problems of Sociological Theory Development. Communities: Social Imagination, Practices, Construction»

April 18-19, 2019, Kyiv, Ukraine

The conference is devoted to the centenary of founding the first professional sociological institution of Ukraine - the Ukrainian Sociological Institute (USI). One of the main field in the work of the USI was a Community Studies, that grounded the tradition of studying the self-organization of the local communities in the domestic social theory.

We invite all interested scholars, lecturers, postgraduate students to apply for presentation on thematic areas of the conference!

Conference fee is 250 UAH for participants from Ukraine 

or - 20 EUR for foreign participants

for full members of Sociological Association of Ukraine (membership fees paid) - 200 UAH;

for postgraduate students and students - 150 UAH;

the moderators of thematic directions can pay the registration fee at their own will

The conference fee covers the cost of publication of proceedings and coffee breaks.

Travel, accommodation and living expenses are covered by participants. At request, participants can be accommodated in the university’s hotel.

Themes of the Conference

1. Sociological Conceptualization of Social Communities, Groups and Networks: from Classic to Post-Modern

Moderator: Prof. Viktor Stepanenko - Institute of Sociology, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine

           Classical and contemporary concepts of social communities and groups (transformation of Gemeinschaft-Gesellschaft dichotomy, organic and mechanic solidarities etc.). Postmodern decline of social community? (Z.Bauman, R.Putnam and others). Imagined and real, formal and informal communities: social imagination, discourses and practices of construction. Personal-local-global in the practices for identification of social grouping and belongings. Social factors and motives of contemporary social integrative and solidarity trends: values or identities? Communities and social cohesion: global trends and Ukrainian social experience.

2. Epistemological Characteristics of Concepts of Social Communities within Multiparadigmality of Theoretical Sociology

Moderator: Prof. V.Sudakov - Faculty of Sociology Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv

Cognitive potential of the category "social community" in the context of the latest social transformations. Conceptual interpretations of the dilemma "society-community" in theoretical sociology of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Typological differences and interconnections between the concepts of urban and rural social communities. Theoretical analysis of ways to strengthen the self-organizing potential of territorial communities in the conditions of decentralization of public administration.

3. Social Communities: Boundaries and Networks of Belonging, Believes, Reciprocity

Moderator: Prof. O.Kutsenko - Faculty of Sociology Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv

Сommunities of friends, neighbors, coworkers, partners, congeners,  on-line friends, etc.. – Do these communities break up the traditional class, status, ethnic, gender boundaries?  Otherwise, do the multiple communities produce more fragmented and multi-encapsulated social space? What does bring people together? Are the communities able to enlarge social justice and peoples’ choice.

4. Values of Modern Societies: Consensus vs Dissensus of Sociocultural Communities

Moderators: Prof. Anatoly Ruchka, Prof. Natalia Kostenko - Institute of Sociology, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine

Modern axiological discourse preserves the differentiation of views on nature and the definition of values inherited from the classics. The questions about the relationship between the discursive and regulatory contexts of value’s existence remain without an unambiguous solution. Whether values are embodied in culture, social structures or in the behavior of individuals? To what extent are these contexts generally compatible, can they be coordinated and non-destructive, can they be invested in a stabilizing public resource, or can they lead to social shifts. Empirically fixed incompatibility and discrepancies in the value preferences of sociocultural communities of Ukrainian society, including by regional criterion, has known historical, cultural and structural rationales, as well as being influenced by current events and unbalanced social conditions. What are the projections of future value movements and changes?

5. "New" Social Movements and New Types of Social Communities as Forms of Civil Activity

Moderator:  Larisa Foster  - Faculty of Sociology Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv

Self-organization, student community,  volunteering, city movements, city grassroots initiatives, the phenomenon of squatting, crowdfunding, etc. – What are these new civil activity forms in Ukraine? Who are their actors? What social effects do they produce? Are these activities a compensation of the state failure? What and how social responsibilities should be shared between the state and the new forms of civil activities?

6. Integration and Disintegration of Local Communities Moderators: Dr. Olena Muradyan, Dr. Tetyana Dublikash - Faculty of Sociology of Kharkiv National University named after V.N. Karazin

The section is aimed at identifying and analyzing factors contributing to the strengthening of integration or disintegration tendencies in territorial communities. Considering certain regions in the comparative and historical perspective, we will try to determine the specificity of the reaction of various territorial communities to the challenges of present days.

7. Monitoring and Evaluation in the Development of Local Communities, Social Programs and Projects

 Moderator:   Prof. Oleh Mazurik - Faculty of Sociology Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv

Theoretical and methodological background, and practices of the monitoring and evaluation technologies application for ensuring efficient social programs and projects, supporting local communities development.

8. Social Communities in the Field of Work: Economic-Sociological Dimension

Moderators: Prof. Tetyana Petrushina, Dr. A. Arseenko– Institute of Sociology, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine

Transformation of social communities in the field of labor under the conditions of neoliberalism. The contradiction between theories and empirical data on the disappearance of the working class in a post-industrial society. Changes in the role of the labor collective under the conditions of "individualized society". Modern theories and practices of the collective bargaining regulation of labor relations. Trade unions as a form of institutionalization of the employees’ social interests. The perspectives of the social communities in the field of labor in the context of contemporary globalization of labor and capital.

9. Empirical Research of Social Communities: Methodology and Methods

10. Round-table: «Formation of Social Services System in Ukraine: Change Trends for New Local Communities»

Moderator: Prof. Oksana Ivankova-Stetsyuk

REQUIREMENTS: three pages (not more than 5 000 symbols) of А4 format, font size 14, interline spacing 1.5, Times New Roman font, all margins - 20 millimeters.

First line – title of thepaper (in capitals, bold font, central alignment). Second line – author’s first and last names, institutional affiliation and position (bold font, right alignment).

Next block – text of the brief outline (justified alignment with 1.25 cm indentation).

References should be put in square brackets – [2: 56], where the first number refers to the position of the source in the list of references, the second number is a page number in the source (see Examples below).

List of references should follow the text of the outline and must be executed in accordance with the existing bibliographic description standards in Ukraine (approved by the Order of the Higher Attestation Commission of Ukraine dated May 29, 2007).

For students and postgraduates students a review of the supervisor requires.
