The Center for Doctoral Studies in Social and Behavioral Sciences invites applications for its PhD program in Social Sciences starting September 2013. PhD scholarships are available.

The University of Mannheim hosts one of Europe’s most highly rated schools of social sciences (QS World University Ranking) offering a unique research envi-ronment.
The PhD program at the School of Social Sciences is offered by the Center for Doctoral Studies in Social and Behavioral Sciences (CDSS), which is part of the inter-disciplinary Graduate School of Economic and Social Sciences (GESS) and is funded by the Ger-man Excellence Initiative.
The program provides graduate training to prepare students for successful academic careers at research universities and institutes. Doctoral students find a variety of specialized courses which are taught by an internationally re-nowned faculty. The permanent staff consists of more than 35 professors and is regularly joined by visiting professors and outside speakers that present and discuss current research work.
Members of the CDSS are leaders in initiatives and at institutes such as the Mannheim Centre for Euro-pean Social Research, the Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences (GESIS), the Central Institute of Mental Health (ZI), the SFB 884 and the Otto-Selz-Institute.

☐ Program structure
The program offers training in three fields of specialization:
• Political Science
• Psychology
• Sociology

The program is designed to be completed within 3 years of full-time study. Each field of speciali-zation has a course program that provides students with the back-ground to engage in independ-ent and professional research and publication. Students can choose from a variety of electives offered by the CDSS or the Cen-ters for Doctoral Studies in Busi-ness (CDSB) and Economics (CDSE).
The CDSS and the School of So-cial Sciences of the University of Mannheim are renowned for their quantitative and analytical orien-tation. Over the recent years, the CDSS has established an impres-sive track record of placing its PhD graduates into academic and non-academic positions. CDSS students have published their research in numerous lead-ing journals.

☐ Financial support
Admitted PhD students receive 3 years of funding which are usually coupled with research or teaching assistantships in the 2nd and 3rd year. Office spaces, research, confer-ence travel and IT support are pro-vided.

☐ Admission
Applicants should have a Master’s degree in the social sciences or a related discipline and a strong background in quantitative meth-ods. We also admit exceptional can-didates with a Bachelor’s degree.
TOEFL scores are required for ad-mission.
